Breaking Through the Looking Glass

My inspirations when I paint come from being human and exploring the challenges we have. For example, when looking in the mirror, we often see a reflection of our thoughts– instead of just our face:  Am I pretty enough? will I fit in? Are my clothes right? We may get caught up in what we imagine others are thinking of us rather than loving and accepting ourselves as we look in the mirror.

So, in this painting, “Breaking Through the Looking Glass”, we finally shatter the unseen barriers. We question expectations, break down the barriers, and move beyond and out of the mirror…  perhaps frustrated and struck by an unknown discomfort that even surprises ourselves… Where we had assumed we were happy and adapted, we now realize we had held ourselves in, protected our hearts, our comforts, and our “things”.  Not aware of what we may have lost: of who we can become, of roles that have become too tight, of seeking perfection when imperfection may be the most powerful. We have broken through to the other side….we can breathe.
